MS KB976002 BrowserChoice.exe - Not Malware
What is "Browser Choice"
After updating systems with MS KB976002 deployed as part of this weeks patch rollout users will be presented a dialog box prompting users to make choices of the Web Browser they are using which, on first site, may causes users & administrators to think it is actually malware. The official MS Description is:
Install this update to access a Choice Screen which lets you select whether and which Web browser(s) to install in addition to Internet Explorer. After you have installed this software update it cannot be removed.
Further information is available at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976002
What users will see:
Despite this being a legitimate application which Microsoft have been made to deploy as part of a European Commission Decision the implementation lacks any Microsoft brand and appears more "Virus Like" than anything else, especially as it tells users they should be connected to the internet before proceeding.
This can be prevented from running at Startup by the removal of the following Registry Key
Path: HKCU / Software / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Run
Key: BrowserChoice - REG_SZ - "C: / Windows / System32 / Browserchoice.exe" /run
