Tax Rebate Scam for Identity Details
Beware Tax Men offering free money!
Everyone is familiar with the constant stream of Phishing messages requesting you complete Online Bank forms , update your details and numerous other sites but now you can claim a Tax Rebate as well. Recipients seeing this scan have received a message telling them:
FORM SAT-19287
Tax Refund Amount: 865.24
Dear Applicant,
You are eligible to receive a tax refund of 865.24, after calculation of your fiscal activity. Your verification form will only be valid only for 24 hours and for verification your details you have the tax file number (TFN): 692553841 (See the tax privacy note in the Taxpayer's declaration on page 8 of your tax refund).
Please complete the individual tax refund 2009, "FORM SAT-19287" attached to this confidential message. After completing the form allow us 5-9 business days in order to process it.
Sincerely,
HM Revenue & Customs
service@hmrc.gov.uk
When opening the attached form they are presented with a webpage which is apparently a Tax Claim form (shown below) requesting you complete your personal details along with the card details where you would like your £865 tax rebate to be paid to.
As with most scams all the proper logos have been included (HMRC, Visa, MasterCard) but in this case to make the page look more "form like" PDF Toolbars have also been included at the Top and Left of the page in an attempt to convince the user they are completing a PDF form, although if you are running a high enough resolution these start to repeat horizontally.
Of course, on clicking the submit button your details are not sent to Her Majesty and in fact are sent to a .biz site for the attackers use.
