Packeteer Bandwidth Management

Bandwidth Management using Packeteer's PacketShaper
One of the most significant costs to many businesses is the cost of Wide Area Network & Internet Access links. As the bandwidth requirements for business grow the cost of maintaining such links grow, although this can be prevented in many cases by the implementation of bandwidth management technologies.

The leader in bandwidth management technology is Packeteer with it's PacketShaper product range. The PacketShaper range allow IT Departments to manipulate the available bandwidth to prioritise traffic type, guarantee minimal amounts of bandwidth for particular applications and restrict other low priority traffic.

NETprotocol is proud to be an accredited Packeteer Affiliate Partner which guarantees our clients technical expertise and a quality of service for implementation and consulting work.

The Packeteer PacketShaper range has a wide variety of applications to suit any scenario where expensive WAN/Internet bandwidth is involved. When used to control Internet bandwidth usage the PacketShaper allows administrators to prioritise traffic depending on type, e.g. SMTP E-Mail traffic, to guarantee a level of service whilst restricting bandwidth for less important traffic, e.g. Internet Radio stations. This traffic management happens in real time so that the bandwidth can be optimised to allow the less important traffic when the bandwidth is not in use but immediately reallocate bandwidth when high priority traffic requires it.

This same theory can be applied to WAN infrastructure to prioritise time critical applications, such as Citrix delivered applications, whilst limiting less time critical applications to preserve overall bandwidth.

In either of these scenarios the end result is that the high priority applications/traffic always have the required bandwidth and the lower priority applications cannot encroach upon it. This leads to optimal bandwidth usage and in many cases a reduction in required bandwidth is possible, therefore reducing the overall cost of WAN/Internet bandwidth costs.

PacketShaper technology works by having a set of rules for traffic types, their priorities and bandwidth requirements. A recent addition to the PacketShaper is the ability to change this set of rules depending on time of day allowing an out-of-hours set of rules to optimise the bandwidth for different traffic types, e.g. bulk data transfers etc.

Once the PacketShaper units have been installed and Traffic rules configured they cannot just be left as traffic behaviors change and bandwidth may need re-optimisation. The process of Classify, Analyse, Control, Report allows for this to happen to always ensure optimal bandwidth use. In brief the process works as follows:

  • Classify - Identify all types of traffic utilising the network and relate them to particular users/applications/background services to understand their requirements. This may also include new traffic types introduced in to network after the initial installation.
  • Analyse - Determine the "un-controlled" traffic profile and the effects on other applications
  • Control - Configure PacketShaping to control the particular traffic types to optimise bandwidth usage
  • Report - Report on traffic profiles, application performance, traffic requests that cannot be serviced and overall performance.

Once this process has been completed and optimal bandwidth usage reached the process will be repeated a regular intervals to maintain the optimal usage situation. In many cases after the initial implementation & review process bi-annual reviews are often satisfactory to maintain optimal operation.

In addition to is bandwidth management capabilities the Packeteer range can also provide in-depth monitoring and reporting information to asses if a PacketShaper is required and would benefit the network. NETprotocol now offers a complete Traffic Analysis service using the Packeteer products at a fixed fee.

Where could PacketShaping Benefit your organisation?

Each organisation has it's own specific requirements although these generally fit in to two categories for Bandwidth Management

  • Wide Area Network Performance problems or high costs
  • Internet Access Performance

PacketShaping can provide significant benefits for both of these problems, in most cases, by prioritising latency sensitive or time critical traffic over less important traffic to ensure that the user experience is always optimal. This can be done in many different ways, too many to detail, therefore to quantify the potential benefits for an organisation NETprotocol offers both a Traffic Analysis Server and Bandwidth Management On-Site Demonstration.

Compression

Whilst intelligent management of traffic provides the maximum performance on any LAN/WAN links compression of certain traffic types can also deliver performance improvements. PacketShaper units are also capable of compressing traffic where appropriate.

Intelligent analysis & assessment of traffic is preformed by the PacketShaper unit to asses if there any potential benefit can be gained by compressing traffic. If there is a benefit to PacketShaper unit will then compress traffic and continue to reassess the data to check that compression is still delivering an overall benefit.

To use PacketShaper compression a PacketShaper unit is required at each end of a data link, unlike bandwidth management which only requires a single PacketShaper.

Traffic Analysis Service

NETprotocol's Traffic Analysis Service allows any organisation to get a clear picture of the traffic using any selected link with detailed information about how traffic changes during the working day. The analysis is performed over either a two week or one month period on the selected link and a full analysis is performed of the captured statistics and a report generated. A typical report will include the following items:

  • Overall Bandwidth Usage
  • Top Ten Traffic types
  • Peak Times Analysis with traffic type breakdown
  • Traffic bottleneck analysis
  • Benefits of Implementing Bandwidth Management on the selected link

In many situations a particular problem is being tackled by the analysis and the report will also include an identification of the cause of the problem and a recommended solution.

Bandwidth Management On-Site Demonstration
In addition to the Traffic Analysis service NETprotocol can also implement a demonstration PacketShaper unit on a select WAN or Internet link and configure Traffic Shaping to control the bandwidth utilisation. This provides the clearest illustration of bandwidth management in general and the specific benefits for a particular site / link.

If a PacketShaper is subsequently purchased from NETprotocol the information gained during the trial on the bandwidth management requirements can immediately be implemented on a purchased unit delivering an instant benefit.

If you are interested in the Traffic Analysis or Bandwidth Management On-Site Demonstration services please contact NETprotocol for further information.

Packeteer produce a wide range of PacketShaper products to suit any organisation/situation whether it is small organisation/branch office or HeadQuarters of large multi-national corporation. There are also specific ISP orientated products with features designed in conjunction with and specifically to suit Internet Service Providers.
